For our October KindCraft event, two local Girl Scouts, Parker Vanhooser, and Emily Nitz, will be leading us in making “plarn”-plastic yarn that will be used to make sleeping mats for the homeless in Kansas City.

Sleeping could be much more comfortable for those less fortunate by giving them a plastic mat that has a nice cushion and will keep them drier. It takes approximately 700-1000 plastic bags to make ONE mat. Our goal is to make 10 plastic mats-that’s 10,000 bags! We have a few groups collecting plastic bags for us already but if you would like to upcycle your plastic bags as well, we encourage you to bring them to the event.

We will have various options of tasks to do based on age level (older kids will help with cutting, younger kids can help measure and loop). Our goal will be to make as many plarn balls (giant balls of plastic yarn!) as we can. Then, the plarn will be given to volunteers who will crochet it into plastic mats. The final product will be given to Uplift Organization, a homeless outreach program out of Kansas City.

It’s important to arrive at the start of the event for instructions, but feel free to stay as long as your family wants to. We will end the event at 7:30 but if you need to leave before then, that is fine.
